Certible is licensed by the International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB) to deliver Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering (CPRE) exams and issue certificates on all levels:

The Foundation level comprises basic knowledge of eliciting, analyzing, specifying, documenting, validating and managing requirements.

A person with a CPRE FL certificate

  • Is familiar with the terminology of requirements engineering/business analysis and requirements management.
  • Understands the basic techniques and methods of requirements engineering and their application.
  • Is familiar with the most established notations for requirements.

Procedure of the CPRE Foundation Level Exam

The exam regulations for the CPRE FL define the process of the exam including the assignment of points for evaluation of the final score.

  • The CPRE FL exam consists of 44-45 multiple choice questions. You have 75 minutes for answering them.
  • Candidates taking the exam in a language other than their native language can request a 25% time extension, giving a total time of 90 minutes

Depending on the difficulty, each question yields 1 to 3 points. The maximum achievable points are given in the header of each question. To pass the exam you have to score at least 70 percent of the points. During the exam it is not allowed to use aids or take breaks outisde the exam room.

The joint exam regulations of the CPRE FL and RE@Agile Primer can be found here:

Self-Study: Preparing for the IREB CPRE-FL exam

Requirements Engineering Fundamentals by Pohl and Rupp

The most important guide for your exam preparation is the CPRE FL syllabus. This document lists and describes all the topics that are relevant for both the examination and your career as a requirement engineer. The syllabus is condensed and compact, and as such the perfect starting point and reference for your self-study.

Of additional help is the CPRE FL practice exam containing solutions and correction aids, in the same form, structure, and style of the actual examination.

For an in-depth guide, we recommend the official Study Guide Requirements Engineering Fundamentals by Klaus Pohl & Chris Rupp. Their book is designed for self-study and covers the curriculum for the CPRE Foundation Level exam as defined by the IREB.

Bridging the gap between Requirements Enginnering and Agile Development starts with the RE@Agile Primer.
Logo of IREB - International Requirements Engineering Board

The RE@Agile Primer conveys the mutual benefits of requirements engineering and agile development. By taking the primer you learn about the beneficial implementation of RE methods and techniques in agile development, and how techniques from agile processes enhance RE practices.

The curriculum of the RE@Agile Primer is laid out for a 1-2 day training schedule, whereby self-study is possible too. Two options of taking an exam are offered, but only one includes a certification:

In either case, no formal requirements are necessary!

  • The proctored RE@Agile Primer exam consists of 22 multiple-choice questions, and provides a duration of 40 minutes.
  • In case that no certification is required, the IREB offers an online self-assessment, consisting of 16 questions within a 30 minute timeframe.

To take the online self-assessment, which is free of charge, you simply need to sign up at the IREB website here, and select it in the drop-down menu.

A preparatory training from one of the recognised Training Providers for the RE@Agile Primer exam is helpful but not mandatory. The exam regulations, syllabus and study guide of the RE@Agile Primer are provided by the IREB and can be found here. These documents are helpful for training providers as well as candidates to prepare courses and for exams.

The Advanced Level consists of modules, with each single one focussing on a specific aspect, technique, task, domain or process.

The following CPRE Advanced Level Syllabi are released and form the basis of the certification exams:

A person with a CPRE AL certificate

  • Is familiar with the terminology of the specific aspect of the AL-certificate.
  • Understands the basic techniques and methods of requirements engineering and their application to the specific aspects of the AL-certificate.
  • Has extensive background knowledge to the specific aspect of the AL-certificate and has applied the knowledge to a real-world project, which is part of the demanding practical exam.

Procedure of the CPRE Advanced Level Exam

The exam regulations for CPRE AL define the two parts of the exam:

  1. a multiple choice test, which has to be passed before the second part of the exam. This follows the structure of the Foundation Level exam, containing 44-45 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have 75 minutes (90 minutes if an extension is granted) to complete the questions, which are each worth 1-3 points depending on the difficulty.
  2. a practical work as a requirements engineer and a paper describing the practical work

Self-Study: Preparing for the IREB CPRE Advanced Level Exams

Also for your Advanced Level exam preparation the corresponding syllabus is an important guide and starting point. Depending on your area of specialization in RE, each Advanced Level has its own syllabus, which can be found here.

Further helpful artifacts provided by the IREB are the handbooks for the CPRE Advanced Levels. These are valuable resources for trainers, trainees, and practioners alike, who are interested in getting a detailed insight to the specific Advanced Level. Although each handbook offers substantive information, it is not a replacement for a dedicated training course.

Systematisches Requirements Engineering by Christof EbertFinally, the IREB kindly provides a pratice exam for each Advanced Level in the same form, structure, and style of the actual examination, including solutions and correction aids to further advance your preparation. Please choose according to your specialization in RE:

IREB CPRE-EL (Expert Level)

The expertise on this highest level of the CPRE program results from continous involvement and activity in the field. These indiviudal yet profound forms of expertise can neither be subsumed into a syllabus nor transferred by trainings. The CPRE Expert Level therefore has no syllabus or training courses. Candidates, however, need to fulfill the following prerequisites before applying for the exam.

Prerequisites:
  1. Hold at least three CPRE Advanced Level certificates.
Up to two can be substituted by other forms clearly related to RE such as university lectures, certain certificates linked to other education schemes (e.g. CBAP, BCS Diploma in Business Analysis, etc.), or substantial publications.
  2. Be active as a Requirements Engineer in various roles and projects amounting to at least three years of full-time equivalent.
  3. Be active as a trainer or coach in Requirements Engineering.
Exam registration:

Candidates interested in taking the CPRE Expert Level exam should contact us at office@certible.com to submit your application and proof of prerequisites (as one single .pdf file), or any related questions. We are happy to assist you from a smooth start to a successful finish.

The exam procedure consists of three parts: written application, written assignment, and oral exam. For further details about the exam regulations, please take a look at our dedicated section for exam procedures.

Please note: the default language for the exam is English. Applicants may ask for other languages for the written assignment and/or oral exam, on which decisions are made exclusively by the IREB. The written application, however, must be provided to us in English.
