Certible is licensed by the International Usability and User Experience Qualification Board (UXQB) to deliver Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience (CPUX) exams and issue certificates on all levels:

The CPUX Foundation Level certification (CPUX-F) attests that the holder has internationally approved and relevant knowledge in the field of Usability and User Experience (UX)

The CPUX-F curriculum covers the following main areas:

  • The human-centered design process
  • Definitions, concepts and guidelines
  • Understanding and specifying use contexts
  • Specifying user requirements
  • Producing design solutions
  • Usability testing
  • User surveys and usability inspections

Procedure of the CPUX Foundation Level Exam

The process for the CPUX Foundation Level exam and its evaluation are defined as follows: The exam always contains 40 multiple choice questions with 6 choices and a varying number of correct answers. You have 75 minutes(or 90 minutes for candidates whose native language differs from the exam language) to answer these questions. To pass the exam you have to score at least 70 percent, which equates to 28 points of 40 possible points. Each question scores 1 point if all correct answers are chosen. Depending on the number of correct answers per question, each correct choice represents an equal part of that point, which add up to one point but are also subtracted if wrong. Though the total score of one question can never be negative. During the exam the use of aids, such as electronic devices or textbooks, is not allowed. There are no formal prerequisites to the certification exam.

The exam regulations for CPUX-F can be found here:

Self-Study: Preparing for the UXQB CPUX-F exam

An ideal place to begin your exam preparations is the UXQB’s Documents Section. This contains a number of useful reference documents, such as the syllabus for CPUX-F and CPUX Advanced Levels, as well as practice exam questions.

German speaking candidates preparing for a CPUX exam might also want to read Basiswissen Usability und User Experience, by Thomas Geis and Guido Tesch. Thomas Geis is a founding member of the UXQB, Guido Tesch has an active role in the German Institute for Standardisation (DIN), setting standards across the field of UX and UI design.

The UXQB advanced level certificate „Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience – User Requirements Engineering“ (CPUX-UR) attests the holder’s in-depth and practical knowledge within the following main areas:

  • Use context analysis
  • Development of user requirements
  • Application and implementation of these competencies as well as of methods such as contextual interviews and participant observations

For both CPUX Advanced levels (CPUX-UR & CPUX-UT) According to the advanced level, successful completion of the CPUX-F certification exam is required. In contrast to the foundation level exam, advanced level exams consist of a theoretical and a practical part, in which acquired knowledge is applied and demonstrated in a practice based use case.

The theory part of the exam consists of an open-ended set of questions, with available time of 90 minutes.

The practice part of the CPUX-UR certification exam comprises an observation of a contextual interview, to thereby develop a use context description. Consecutively, this needs to be analysed regarding its derivable user requirements.

Self-Study: Preparing for the UXQB CPUX UR Exams

An ideal place to begin preparing for the CPUX Advanced Levels CPUX-UR and CPUX-UT is the UXQB’s Documents Section. This contains a number of useful documents such as the respective syllabi, exam regulations and practice questions for the theoretical and practical parts, test reports, examples and more.

For a more in-depth preparation for the CPUX-UR certification, German-speaking candidates may want to refer to the official study book Praxiswissen User Requirements by Thomas Geis and Knut Polkehn. Both authors are members of the UXQB Board of Directors, meaning that this book goes beyond conforming to the CPUX-UR Syllabus, providing the necessary knowledge directly from the source.

The UXQB advanced level certificate „Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience – Usability Testing and Evaluation“ (CPUX-UT) attests the holder’s in-depth and practical knowledge within the following main areas:

  • Terms and concepts in testing and evaluating user interfaces
  • Planning, conducting, and documenting usability tests, expert reviews, and user surveys (quantitative and qualitative)

According to the advanced level, successful completion of the CPUX-F certification exam is required. In contrast to the foundation level exam, advanced level exams consist of a theoretical and a practical part, in which acquired knowledge is applied and demonstrated in a practice based use case.

The theory part of the exam consists of an open-ended set of questions, with available time of 90 minutes.

The practice part of the CPUX-UT certification exam requires conducting usability tests of three websites, with self-acquired participants. These usability tests shall be conducted within one week, as far as possible. To submit for evaluation are the test reports and the raw video data.

As preparation for the exam, recognised training providers offer specialised advanced level trainings. While such trainings are not mandatory, they are helpful. Particularly with regard to the practical test of the CPUX-UT exam, it might prove beneficial to clarify with training providers if facilities may be used, as usability-labs could exist and be used after the theoretical test.

The curriculum of the CPUX-UT certificate is provided by the UXQB and can be found here . Another means of preparation is a publicly accessible usability test report , as well as further documents related to the CPUX-UT certification exam.
